Encouragement from this episode:
Jennifer talked about solutions to self-focus and perfectionism. We talked about how we need to:
- Repent of trying to de-throne God from our heart.
- Instead of thinking on our own faults and imperfections, turn our thoughts more on God, who he is, what he does, his attributes.
- Instead of striving for acceptance, strive for holiness in the power of the Holy Spirit, believing his promises to sanctify us are true.
- Fight for faith when our tendency is to despair and give up. We fight for faith by being in God’s word and praying!
- Continue in good works, abiding in Christ and building on Jesus Christ as our foundation.
How we can encourage one another:
- When we see another sister struggling with perfectionism, we can encourage her by praying for her and praying with her.
- Consider developing a discipleship relationship with her making sure it is completely focused on Christ.
Resources mentioned:
Lay Aside the Weight of Perfectionism : by Jon Bloom for Desiring God, (June 9, 2017) “Perfectionism is a pride- or fear-based compulsion that either fuels our obsessive fixation on doing something perfectly or paralyzes us from acting at all — both of which often result in the harmful neglect of other necessary or good things.”
Jennifer talked about how she’s been encouraged by Gloria Furman’s newest book, Labor with Hope (Crossway, 2019).

Devotional transcript:
Lord, make us faithful women. May we come to you to relieve us of the burden of perfectionism. You promise that you’ve given us everything we need for life and godliness, so help us by the power of your Holy Spirit to hold onto your promises and believe that they’re true. Strengthen us to work out the salvation that you worked in us, to make our calling and election sure, and to overflow with fruit as we abide in you. Father, it’s because of Jesus and all he has done for us that we can ask this, and know that you will do it, and Amen.
